When you go to a dentist for a cosmetic procedure to make your teeth look better, dental bonding may be just what you need. This process uses a resin material (plastic) that is applied to the tooth or teeth to correct problems and give it a more appealing appearance.
When It Can Be Used
The resin material is the same as the material that is used for fillings. It is tooth-colored so that it cannot be spotted easily. A dentist may also use it:
- To repair chipped teeth
- To cover discolored teeth
- To alter the shape of teeth
- To close gaps between teeth
- To cover a tooth’s root for protection.
The Application Process
In many cases, the bonding material can be applied in a single session with the dentist. This depends on how many teeth will need the compound put on them. Most of the time, no anesthesia is required – except when being used for a filling.
The dentist will color match the material before applying it. In some cases, some tooth material may need to be removed first. The tooth or teeth will then be roughened to ensure the compound adheres better to the tooth. After the compound is applied to the teeth, it will be shaped by the dentist, and then a special light will be used to harden it. Once the hardening is completed, the dentist will shape it further and polish it to look like your other teeth.
The resin material used in these dental procedures is not as strong as other materials used for cosmetic procedures such as crowns or veneers. The softer material means that it is not as durable, so it is often used only where less pressure is apt to be applied, such as on the front teeth. Habits such as biting your nails, chewing on ice or pencils, or grinding your teeth can chip or crack the material. With good care and careful biting and chewing of your food, it should last for five to ten years. When there is a problem, it can be repaired.
The resin is not completely stain-resistant. Dark liquids such as coffee, tea, dark sodas, wine, etc., can stain the bonded material. Smoking will also stain it. It may be permanent and teeth whiteners are not apt to whiten it.
The best way to cover your teeth and get a Hollywood smile is to get dental veneers. While this type of covering for your teeth is the best and most durable, it is very expensive. Choosing a resin-based material is a much less expensive alternative. Another advantage is that you can often get the treatment you need in just one visit, but veneers will take two or more.
