Improve Your Smile With Non-Surgical Dental Treatments

There are many procedures that dentists perform on a regular basis to help their patients. Many of them are non-surgical treatments that can help protect the teeth and gums from damage. These treatments help teeth to remain white and beautiful.

The treatments may include:

  • Teeth Cleaning

This treatment will remove any plaque on your teeth that you may have missed. Teeth cleaning will also remove any excess food particles and plaque between your teeth. Tartar and stains will also be removed, giving you really clean teeth.

  • Teeth Whitening

Your smile will look great with really white teeth. The dentist can whiten them faster than any store-bought kit because the chemicals are stronger. The fastest way to get very white teeth is to get laser teeth whitening. This process can whiten your teeth by as much as five or six times in one sitting. Some tooth colors (gray) will not whiten as much as other colors.

  • Scaling and Root Planing

When people have periodontal disease, the bacteria and inflammation must be removed from the pockets that have formed on the teeth. Without non-surgical treatments, the damage will continue to disintegrate the gums, the ligaments that support the teeth, and the jaw bone.

During scaling and root planing, the dentist will pull back the gums and manually remove the bacteria and inflammation debris. The teeth are then scraped to remove any bumps and rough spots to prevent reattachment spots for the bacteria. Some dentists will destroy the bacteria in the pockets with laser light from fiber optics, which does a more thorough job. Medications will likely also be used with this treatment.

  • Sealants

Dental sealants are able to protect the teeth more than you could with just brushing and flossing. A sealant provides a thin plastic coating on the tooth or teeth that are treated. It is especially useful for children who do not brush well, or for people who cannot brush as they should. This treatment is best given to children on their molars after they first appear around age six. The coating will reduce the risk of cavities by as much as 80 percent.

  • Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that naturally strengthens your teeth. The dentist can apply fluoride on your teeth and those of your children to help protect them against cavities. It will not repair teeth, but it will prevent cavities from going deeper. Some people are at a much higher risk for cavities and a fluoride treatment can benefit them. The fluoride is applied as a rinse, gel, foam, or varnish. The application only takes a couple of minutes. In some cases, it may also be taken as a pill.

  • Cosmetic Dentistry

When your teeth could benefit from improvement, there are some cosmetic dentistry treatments that can do wonders for your smile and face. Dental veneers often do not even require any anesthesia, but more than one appointment will be necessary. Veneers are applied to the front of your teeth and they can correct many imperfections in your teeth.
