Every now and then, you may hear some dentist tell you that you need to have a root canal. This is a common dental procedure that is used to save a tooth. Some dentists may be able to do this task, or a special root canal dentist Farmingdale may be needed.
About Root Canals
Teeth can become decayed or damaged to the point where they are almost beyond repair. The tooth may be broken, or much of the crown may be decayed or cracked. Under these circumstances in earlier days, the tooth would simply have been extracted.
Instead of removing the tooth, a root canal dentist Farmingdale at Global family Dental is able to save it through a process called root canal. It involves removing the decay in the crown and removing the pulp and nerves in the tooth. When that is completed and the tooth sterilized, a rubber-like substance called gutta percha is put in its place.
Another primary reason to have a root canal is to stop the toothache pain. There is an infection in the tooth, which is why it is considered not savable. Removing the nerve in the tooth takes the infection and the pain away almost immediately, and because there is no more nerve in the tooth, that nerve will not be causing pain. The problem with an infection is that it will spread. This is called an abscess and it is serious – if not treated it could become fatal.
On rare occasion, a root canal may need to be redone. This may be because not all the bacteria in the many canals of the tooth were destroyed, but dentists make every effort to ensure that it is sterile. After sterilizing the canals in the tooth, it is sealed to prevent further infection.
The top of the tooth is prepared for a new crown. The crown can be made of any material you choose – gold, porcelain, zirconium, etc., but it will usually need to be made in a lab. A temporary crown will usually be made until the permanent one comes in.
Some dental offices have their own crown milling machine. After scanning your mouth with a digital scanner, the information is sent to the milling machine to make your new tooth. It only takes a few minutes to make your new crown, letting the root canal procedure be completed in just one visit.
A root canal can last for many years and they often do. Instead of losing a tooth and creating a gap in your teeth, or requiring a tooth replacement, saving one of your natural teeth is the better option when it is possible. When you have a gap in your teeth, teeth nearby will slowly move into that space, causing them to misalign. You will also have bone loss under that tooth. A root canal enables your teeth to stay aligned and it will prevent bone loss.
