Toothaches Dentist Long Island

Dentists regularly treat people for toothaches. In fact, many people will only see a dentist when they get a tooth that hurts. Dentists are experts at identifying why a tooth may hurt and being able to offer real remedies for it.

The Cause of a Toothache

Although there are several reasons for an aching tooth, the main reason is always going to be tooth decay. This is caused by bacteria in the mouth that produces acid when it comes in contact with sugar. This means that the more sugar and carbs that someone consumes, the more bacteria and acid there will be.

A lack of proper care of your teeth will mean that the bacteria and acid are left on your teeth for many hours at a time – slowly eroding away the enamel. If you drink a lot of sodas or specialty coffees and fruit juice, it means a lot more sugar – and more acid. All these drinks also have their own acid which speeds up the erosion.

Some other reasons for tooth pain include:

  • Leaving food between your teeth – not flossing
  • Infection (inflammation) at the base of the tooth
  • Injury to a tooth
  • Wisdom teeth that do not have room to erupt
  • A cracked tooth
  • Gum disease
  • Sensitive teeth
  • A sinus infection (a non-dental cause).

Getting a Diagnosis

When you go to the dentist with tooth pain, various tests may be used to determine the exact problem. Most likely, there will be an x-ray taken. This will enable the dentist to see the roots of the teeth and any problem that might be out of view. Other tests may include using a slight tapping on the teeth, a cold air test, or a biting test.

Treatment

When you have tooth pain, it is important to realize that there is a problem that is not going to go away. While the pain may be eased somewhat at times, the problem is still there. The longer you leave it untreated, the bigger and more expensive it becomes to treat it.

One of the above causes – an abscessed tooth – needs to be treated right away. Because of infection in the gums, the infection can quickly spread. It can affect other parts of your body, including your heart or brain. If this happens, it could be fatal. When you have an abscessed tooth, the pain will usually be quite severe.

Preventing Toothaches

Although you cannot totally prevent a toothache, you can reduce the likelihood of getting one. Brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day and flossing is the most important thing you need to do. Then, you can also cut back on your sugar intake, rinse your mouth out with water after eating something sugary, and using a fluoride-based toothpaste or mouthwash.

The dentists at Global Family Dental can help you get toothache pain relief from toothaches and fix the problem. Other treatments may also be given to help prevent cavities such as fluoride treatments and sealants. Call us today for more information or to set up an appointment.
