When you want teeth that look brilliant and beautiful, dental veneers can change your teeth and give you the great smile you have always wanted. These thin covers for your teeth, which are also called porcelain laminates, can hide a multitude of problems and give you greater self-confidence.
Dental veneers are made of a thin layer of porcelain. Various types come in different thicknesses. They have a natural looking color and translucence to them, which makes them look like your natural teeth. They are applied to your front teeth.
These covers for your teeth can be used to hide many flaws. They can cover problems such as cracked teeth, chipped, discolored, short, slightly misaligned, and may even be used to hide a space between your teeth.
Although composite bonding is another way to cover up many dental flaws, porcelain laminates look better. They reflect the light in a way that makes them look more natural. They will also resist stains better than composites.
The Dental Appointment
At your first dental appointment, the dentist will verify that porcelain laminates can actually provide the benefit you want. Not everyone will be able to get the same results because it depends on the condition of your teeth. Generally, porcelain laminates can only correct more minor problems.
After being approved, the dentist will remove some of the enamel from the teeth that will receive the laminates. This is an irreversible process. Then, a scan will be taken of your teeth, or a mold will be made of them. This is often done with digital scanners in more modern offices, which enables the information to be fed straight into the computer. From there, the desired shapes are designed and then it is sent to a lab for them to make them.
Putting Them On
When the laminates come from the lab, you will be given a second appointment. The dentist will then take each one and hold it up to your teeth to check the size and shape. Each one will then be shaped and trimmed two or three times to make them perfect a perfect fit. Once the dentist is satisfied, a strong adhesive will be applied and it will be put in place. This procedure will be followed for each one.
A special light will be used to harden the adhesive. It is activated by the light, which will make it permanent.
Being that porcelain laminates are made of ceramic material, they are naturally hard. Some care does need to be taken and hard foods should be avoided, such as chewing on ice, hard candy, pencils, or similar materials. With good care, they should last up to 15 years.
